Texting While Sewing Top 10 Finalists

textingwhilesewing2b

The Texting While Sewing 2 Contest deadline was last night at midnight. I spent the morning looking over the entries and trying to narrow it down to the top 10.  That wasn’t easy!!  A lot of time and energy went into each and every entry and I am so grateful for everyone who played along.  I did manage to settle on the top 10.  My focus was the creative use of text and zippers.

I am going to share the top ten in a random order:

October 2015 036

1. This is Danette Stankovich’s emailed entry.  She made a Downton Abbey themed bag.  Lots of little details make this bag truly creative.  She not only used the Downton text prints, but she pieced 4 paper pieced blocks with Downton themes and all of them include fussy cut text prints.  There are even fussy cuts running down the sides of this bag. You must click over to her blog to see all the pictures and read about it.  Zips are inside (check!).

sewing_with_dragons2.  This is sewing_with_dragons bag with an appliqued sewing machine made of fussy cut sewing and design words. The zipper is included in a little pouch that is hidden in the outer pocket.  Check her feed for other views of the bag!

saphre1964

3.  This tote is made by saphre1964 and is titled Careful What You Say.  Not only did she use text in a creative way, she used the zipper decoratively which is really fun.  She has some other great pictures of the tote in her feed.  This is such an artsy bag making a great statement.

queenpeach_20

4.  Queenpeach_20 made a bag that serves as her travel momento from a trip to Japan. It includes fabrics purchased in Japan, tea fabrics to suggest Japanese tea ceremonies, and fabric that includes her last name, “Peach.”  I also love the way the zip was incorporated in the fun outer pocket, set at a quirky angle.  Check her feed for newly added daytime pics.

scrapnhappy

5. This Zip a dee doo dah bag by scrappynhappy is a fun because it combines the zipper and text requirements.  You have to click to her feed to see the back of the bag that has three zippers, each a different color, with the lining of that pocket a text fabric in the coordinating color.  I love that detail.

randomjeanious

6.  How clever is this zebra tote by randomjeanious?  Not only is the zebra pieced with black and white text prints, it has a concealed zipper in the mane that opens to reveal zebra fabric.  Click through to her feed to see an overall shot of the finished bag.

misterandmouse

7.  Misterandmouse had way too much fun making up a story and crafting this fussy cut newspaper front for her tablet cover.  Click through to her feed to see the back and inside too and read her story.

acrafty_maker

8. acrafty_maker made this drawstring bag with playmat.  The zipper is included in the center of the mat where there is a pocket to hold toys.  You can better see all the texty details she used in the eye spy patchwork if you click through to her blog post so I encourage you to do that!

MegaZipperTote.long

9.  Happysewlucky made a Mega Zipper Zipper Tote to organize all of her zippers by size or type.  Each pocket is made of a different text print and the size or type of zipper is fussy cut on the pocket.  The entire thing looks like a zipper when it is unfolded…very clever!

elnorac

10. This Cotton + Steel selvage bag was made by elnorac.  I love the way the texty selvages enhance the design of the bag.

The top ten will now be reviewed by our guest judge, Penny from Sew Take a Hike. The top three winners and the randomly drawn participant, will be announced on Sunday.
Thank you everyone for participating and sharing your creativity!
Thank you to our sponsors for enticing people to enter!

Texting While Sewing 2 All the Details!

textingwhilesewing2b

I’m happy to hear that there are a lot of people excited about this contest!  It’s going to be so much fun!  As promised, I am back today with all the details.  Let’s start with the rules.

1.  All contestants must make a bag that includes a zipper.  The design of the bag must use text fabric in a creative way.

2.  The bag pattern does not have to be original.  If you make a block and incorporate it into the bag, your block design does not have to be original.  However, if you use a designer’s bag or block pattern, you must credit them.

3.  The bag can be any size and any style.

4.  The zipper does not need to be functional.  In order words, it could be used as an embellishment.

5. Any sewing/piecing techniques can be used including, but not limited to, applique, paper piecing, improv and traditional piecing.

5.  All entries must be complete and submitted by November 2, 2015.  To submit your entry, post it on Instagram using the hashtag #textingwhilesewing2 AND tag me @duringquiettime.  You may put in-progress pictures or images of stacks of delicious text prints and colorful zippers on Instagram as well but it is not required.  If you do not use Instagram, you may email me a good picture of your final project or a blog link if you posted it on your blog.  The preferred method of entry is on Instagram but I don’t want to exclude anyone.

On November 3rd, I will select the top ten from all the entries.  Then I will forward the top ten to our guest judge.

PennyLayman

Our guest judge is Penny Layman of SewTakeAHike! Much thanks to Penny for taking on such a difficult task! She will need to assign first, second and third place winners.

Once Penny is done, I will make an announcement with all the winner’s names which will include not only the first, second and third place winners but also a very special participation prize. The participation prize will be a random draw from all the entries. I hope that this will help encourage participation!

If you want to start with a little inspiration, you can see the winner’s from Texting While Sewing 1 here. Remember, the rules were different for that contest though. We made blocks not bags.

In another day or two I will post all the prizes to really tempt you! Including them in this post would have made it too long.

If you have any questions, ask them here and I will reply in the comment section so everyone can read the reply.

I can’t wait to see what you make! Go get creative!

**If you use the hashtag #textingwhilesewing2 or email me your images, you are thereby giving me permission to share the images on my blog and IG as I wish.**

Texting While Sewing Winners

Many thanks to Kerry and Ayumi who have spent the last few days studying the top ten blocks and making difficult decisions.  The top ten blocks were judged for their creative use of text fabrics.  Of course all of the blocks used text fabrics creatively so that’s what made the decision so hard!  After much deliberation, we are pleased to announce and congratulate the three winners of the Texting while Sewing Contest:
First Place Winner
A big congratulations goes out to Laurraine who produced this amazing block called “Scalloping on the Bias Cafe.”  There is such a huge range of teeny tiny text bits in this block and they are used so cleverly with humor as well.
Laurraine will receive:
A $50 gift certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop.
From Sew Me A Song, a bundle of eight half yard cuts of Becca’s newest and greatest text fabrics for a total of 4 yards.

From Quilted Treasures, a Lucy’s Crab Shack Bundle your choice of “Guy” or “Gal” (gal pictured above).

And for those who have trouble with the fine print (he, he, he) a Beam N Read hands free crafting light and magnifier.

Second Place Winner

A round of applause please for Cindy, who created an imaginary conversation between two sisters on an iPad.  She took the “texting while sewing” theme quite literally!  Clearly Cindy’s years of selvage collecting has paid off in this block.
Cindy will receive:
A $40 gift certificate from Sew Fresh Fabrics to spend however you like.
A $35 gift certificate to Zipit, my all time favorite zipper shop on Etsy.
From Sew Me A Song, a fat quarter bundle of eight of Becca’s newest and greatest text fabrics for a total of 2 yards.
Third Place Winner

Kristy has won third place for her Quilt Bible.  Look at the tiny piecing on those sample blocks with their names fussy cut below.  And I think that the selvage bookmark is genius.
Kristy will receive:
A $25 gift certificate to spend at Fresh Squeezed Fabrics.
From Sew Me A Song, a fat quarter bundle of eight of Becca’s newest and greatest text fabrics for a total of 2 yards.

1/2 yard cuts of the three colorways of Summersville Alphabetty for a total of 1 1/2 yard from Marmalade Fabrics
And a charm pack of Summersville from Quilted Treasures.
For one last time, I would like to thank all the contestants for taking the time and creative energy needed to join my contest.  And thank you so much to all my sponsors who made entering this contest oh so tempting!

Texting While Sewing Top 10

Today is the day to announce the top 10 finalists for the Texting while Sewing contest.  It was so very hard to limit my choice to 10 blocks.  I tried very hard to focus on the crux of the matter, did the block use text fabrics creatively?  I tried to imagine the block without the text fabrics to see if the text fabrics contributed greatly to the block or if it would have been as successful without them.  A couple of my favorite block designs didn’t make it because the use of text in those blocks isn’t as creative as others even though their block designs are spectacular.  It was hard.
So, here we go.  These are the top 10 blocks, in the order that they were entered.  Kerry and Ayumi are at work deciding on the top 3 winners.  I am feeling badly for them at the moment!
Congratulations to:

Contest Questions Answered

You know about the Texting while Sewing Contest right??  If you do not, the Rules of the Contest can be found hereand the incentive (prizes!) can be found here.  I’d like to say a great big thank you again to my sponsors for the wonderful prizes.  If you are still looking for material for your entries, please check out the links in my sidebar. I’m sure you will find what you are looking for!

I have received a few questions about the contest and I thought I would take a minute to write my answers here in case anyone else was wondering the same things.
1.  Can I enter more than one block?  Yes!  You may enter more than one block but please write a separate blog post for each entry when it is link up time and link up each entry individually. That will help me when corresponding with our guest judges Kerry and Ayumi.  No individual can win more than one prize, however.
2.  Is applique acceptable?  Yes it is.
3.  Can I make my own text fabric?  Sure thing!
If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!  Feel free to join the Flickr group as well. A couple of people have already shared their entries and there are some pretty stacks of text fabrics there too.

Texting While Sewing Contest!

I would like to announce a summer contest for all you lovers of text fabrics!  My contest idea was inspired by the name of a fat quarter bundle in the Sew Me A Song shop, “Texting While Sewing Encouraged.”  Isn’t that a clever name?  Love it.
Here’s how you enter:  The goal of the contest is to use text fabric creatively in a 12″ quilt block.  I am keeping it small and manageable for summer. Your block can be traditionally pieced, paper pieced, improvisationally pieced, whatever you like.  You can use your own design or a commercially produced pattern or traditional block (please just give credit where credit is due in your blog post).  What I am looking for is creative use of your text fabrics in the design.
You will enter by blogging about the contest and linking up via a Linky post on my blog which will be up August 27, 28 and 29, 2012.  I will select my top ten favorite blocks (could be more depending on the number of entries) and then I will turn them over to my fabulous guest judges, Kerry (aka verykerryberry) and Ayumi (aka pinkpenguin).  We will announce the first, second, and third prize winners no later than Sept. 3.
Here are a few examples of blocks made using text fabrics:
Knitting Basket Block for Charise
In this knitting basket block, Kerry has used text quite a bit but I particularly like how she used the lines of text to represent strands of yarn in the yarn ball.
Scissors for Amisha ~ Patchwork 318 Bee ~

This block by Ayumi incorporates text fabric in so many ways. Like Kerry, she uses the lines of text to represent strands of thread on the spool  I love how she used sewing text fabric in a sewing block to further the theme.
Paper Pieced Watering Can

Similarly, I used all gardening related texts when making this paper pieced Watering Can block.

I am sharing these images for inspiration only. I want to see your creative ideas.  These blocks happen to be paper pieced but you could also choose to put a new spin on a Traditional quilt block by using text, for example.

You can use older, out of print, coveted bits of text fabric or some of the new prints that are available now like Summersville and Lucy’s Crab Shack.

There are very few rules because I want to let you be creative!

If you are anxious to share your block and get feedback before the link up days, you can share them in the Texting While Sewing Flickr Group.

And yes, there are prizes!!  Actually, there are lots of prizes!  I will be back soon with another post just dedicated to the prizes for this contest.  The prizes are definitely worth it so put your thinking caps on and get sketching!
Please feel free to grab this button and link it back to this post.  If you could spread the word, I’d be grateful!
If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments section and I will reply because it is likely that others have the same question.  I’ll be back soon to tell you about the prizes!
