The theme of the Mini QT Swap for May is black and white plus one color and the quilt cannot be square or rectangle. This is what I came up with for my partner, Jess/hectichousehold. I feel like a bee is a sort of obvious choice for a black and white plus one but I love, love, love gardening so I wanted to use this idea. I made a three layer Dresden plate with rounded, raw edge applique. I then washed the quilt to get the edges fraying a bit. The center is stuffed a bit and embellished with French knots. The little bee is stuffed a bit as well and I just used a simple back stitch for his stripes. I know I broke the rule: “Please use quality materials.” when using the strange iridescent, plasticy material for the wings but I have already forgiven myself (and I hope Jess will too) because it made for perfect little wings! I attached a piece of white baby ric rac at the top of the binding and hung a little leaf from it. The back of the leaf has the label information for the swap. I am most proud of the binding because it is cut on bias, which I never do, and I had to piece three short strips together and it really looks seamless! It took a few tries but I was able to connect the strips and get the design to match. That really pleased me. The mini quilt measures 11″ diameter. This is such a fun swap. I am looking forward to next month!
