I just finished up a new paper pieced pattern called Vintage Bathing Suit. I have no idea what I will make with the block yet. A beach bag would be the logical application but I just finished making one of those. Mostly, I made the pattern because I just needed to.
You see, my husband and I stopped at this shop called Antiques on Nine on Rte. 9 in ME on our way from Kennebunkport to Kittery.
While walking around, I noticed this framed vintage bathing suit and immediately knew I wanted to make a paper pieced block from it! So I snapped a picture to bring home.
Staying true to my inspiration, I made the block in navy and white polka dot. When I showed it to my mom, she told me that it immediately brought Esther Williams to mind. I did a quick google search for pictures of her in similar suits and noticed that she had just died in June of this year. So this block is my little ode to Esther Williams.
If you’d like to sew one, the pattern is available in my Etsy shop and Craftsy shop. It’s the perfect time of year to sew a bathing suit block!
