Now that the summer is here, Penny and I have resumed reading the Little House series and working on her quilt. If you would like to join us, check out the Sew Along menu button from my Home page header. We just finished reading On the Banks of Plum Creek, where the Ingalls family moves to a town with a church for the first time. I bought a half yard of Bible verse fabric when I was making Mrs. Kim’s coffee cup for my Gilmore Girls quilt and regretted having to buy so much of it…but Penny was really excited to use it for the church! I think it works perfectly. This block is a little picky to sew, cut using templates. So it required more help than some of the others. Penny really saw how important keeping her 1/4″ seam was when we tried to press certain pieces flat or fit them together. So we did a little unsewing. I told Penny that I have never regretted taking the time to seam rip and do something right. She was a good sport too! Oh, here is a tip that might help you while sewing with your child. I saw an opportunity here to cut the grass strip oversize. Then I squared up the lower edge of the church and attached that piece and trimmed it to the correct size so that we could maintain the correct block size. Whenever there is a piece like that, that can be cut oversize, it gives your child a little wiggle room and can make up for slight errors so your block can be trimmed to the right size.
