Little House on the Prairie Sew Along: Chalkboard and Dove in the Window

I hope you aren’t tired of seeing this smiling face because she has two more blocks to share with you today and her final two blocks in the works.  She is still determined and wants to finish her Little House on the Prairie quilt this year (which means a lot of work for me too because I am sewing the top together, basting, quilting and binding it for her.)  Penny finished reading These Happy Golden Years, and like her older sister, I think this was her favorite book. She also loved the love story aspect of the book. Who knew I was raising such romantics!  You can read about her sister’s version of the block and see the block instructions here. In this book, Laura became a teacher so this is her chalkboard.

This is also the book in which Laura and Almanzo get married (the love story that I alluded to before).  In their new home, they use the Dove in the Window quilt that Laura sewed while Mary sewed her Nine Patch quilt when they were girls.  So this is a Dove in the Window block.  The instructions are in my earlier sew along post here.  I nearly forgot to mention that Penny insisted on holding the Dove in the Window block in the window…this is 8 year old humor at it’s best!

My rule is that the book has to be read before the blocks are sewn but I am bending my rule slightly to help Penny with her self imposed deadline.  She is half way through the last book of the series so I am going to start the first block with her.  When she finishes, we will sew the last block.  We just can’t wait to show you her finished quilt!  And I really want to get a picture of both of my girls with their Little House on the Prairie quilts. I think that would be pretty special.
