Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century

I’m so excited about this new book, Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century by Riane Menardi, Alissa Haight Carlton and Heather Grant.  I can’t wait to get it in my hands and flip through it!  The book includes more than 200 quilts curated by Modern Quilt Guild.  It traces the history of modern quilting and identifies the hallmarks of the genre.  The book is hardcover and full of large, color photographs.  One of the things that I love most about this book is that 100% of the royalties go to the Modern Quilt Guild, a non-profit 501(c)3.  You can preorder the book on Amazon.  I’ve been told that it should be shipping soon.

I am fortunate to have two of my quilts included in the book.  The first is Pointed Statement, completed in 2015.  This quilt is paper pieced and is a repeating block but the colors were chosen at random as I pieced so that the overall look suggests alternate gridwork–it’s not as obvious where the blocks repeat. I like that about it!  I wanted to create a modern quilt using triangles in a different way.  We see so many half square triangles so I chose to use triangles of different shapes and sizes. I am offering this pattern for sale at Etsy , Craftsy, or my website.

Caged, completed in 2016, is also included.  In this case, I was exploring what I call large scale paper piecing to make perfectly precise, large, geometric shapes.  I used light and dark solids to create dimension.  This pattern is also available for sale on Etsy, Craftsy or my website.
I am a happy supporter of the MQG because the modern quilting aesthetic got me interested in quilting in the first place.  Without it, I would probably not be a quilter today.  I am a member of my local guild, that I founded along with a couple of friends a number of years ago now, and I volunteer to coordinate the QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge.  I am grateful for all the opportunities the MQG has opened up for me.
