Kites Tails #3!

I just finished up my third Kite Tails Quilt. I first designed this quilt 10 years ago when I made it for the MQG Pattern of the Month. I then sewed a second version for Cotton + Steel for Quilt Market. And now, all these years later, I sewed this third version for my son.

The colors were sort of chosen by Timothy. He asked for reds and golds. But I was working from my stash and I don’t have a lot of reds. I also know that he likes oranges so I found red/oranges and a few shades of yellow to gold. Then I started adding in some other colors for more variety. I tried to include as many geometrics and animals as I could, with my floral heavy stash. I ran all the choices by him so he’d like it and he’s very happy with it!

I sent him pictures of possible backing fabrics, at college, and he chose this bird print from Ruby Star Society. I think it was a great choice.

I’m excited for him to come home next week and see it in person!

If you are looking for the pattern, I have a free tutorial but the pattern is also in Improv Paper Piecing.
