Witch’s Garden

A modern, foundation paper pieced, Halloween quilt with flower blocks, bat blocks, and a pumpkin block. The flowers all have spooky faces.

Pammie Jane, a Dear Stella designer, shared some of her new Costume Party Halloween fabric collection with me. I particularly liked her print called Spacey and decided to use it for a background fabric for a Halloween quilt. Spacey is black with little stars in many colors. It makes for a great background for foundation paper piecing because it’s non-directional and a small print. After some thinking….I decided to create a spooky garden.

I designed 3 flowers that one might find in a witch’s garden….Vampire, Blank Stare, and Evil Eyes. Even though they are Halloween themed, I designed them in the same style and size as my Petal + Stem blocks so they are compatible! And what spooky garden would be complete without a bat? So I designed one of those too!

The bat also works with all the Petal + Stem layouts but also comes in a larger 10″ block as shown in this photo. I thought it might be the perfect addition to a night garden quilt and some people might want a 6″ block and others, something larger.

I used the Potting Mix layout from Petal + Stem to design this quilt. I added in the Frog (or Toad if you will for this theme…) and Pumpkin blocks. The pots are also made with Pammie Jane fabric from Costume Party. That print is called Haunted in Pumpkin.

I had so much fun making this Halloween version of the Potting Mix quilt with all new flower designs. If you are interested in the patterns you can find them here:

I can picture all of these designs working into night garden quilts or used for Halloween treat bags too. You certainly do not need Petal + Stem to use these patterns. It just gives you even more options.

  1. I love your Witch’s Garden quilt. I am ordering Witch’s Garden Bouquet, and Bat. I already have the Frog/Toad, and Petal & Stem Book. And, probably all the fabric. I am a bit of a hoarder.
Thank you for such great patterns and ideas. I am a huge fan of your work.

    Sincerely,
    Bonnie Stalker

  2. Do you have a layout for the Witch’s Garden quilt? I am having a little trouble figuring out what goes where. Thanks again for all your help.
    Sincerely, Bonnie
