I just completed this quilt that I am naming Eye of the Storm. It’s not a repeated block design, so that it something kind of different from me, but otherwise, it repeats things I have worked on in the past. I chose to approach the colors in a way that is similar to my Sophisticate Quilt that I made in 2018 but is still a favorite.
It’s quite possible that I even used some of the same fabrics I had left over! In Sophisticate, my pieced design was completed in shade of grey. This time around, I used a deep green that is very challenging to photograph but shows better in my detail shot below.
I worked with curved shapes created through straight lines, which is a recurring theme in my work. I broke the circles here and there because I was channeling the idea of “spinning out of control” because that’s how I feel in the current political climate. But through my color choices, which were intended to be beautiful and not channel the anxiety, I ended up creating something that does look like the eye of a storm. The eye of a storm is the calm center. I guess it’s entirely appropriate because creating is my way of centering myself and calming in the midst of a storm.
I decided to matchstick quilt this top using all the shades that I pieced with. I pulled all these spools from my stash and thought that I might actually use up a bunch of them with all the quilting but, in reality, I only emptied two!
To finish, I faced this quilt. It measures approximately 36″ square.

Beautiful! I thought of Hurricane Katrina when I saw it. I lost everything in that storm but God was there throughout everything!

I love this. I love how your pattern has some larger pieces in with thinner ones. I have a tutorial on an Improv Quilt (Impracticality) by Angela Walters but have not been brave enough to make it. It goes around and around and is put together similar to a crazy quilt. It has a lot of thin lines. I have a hard time with Improv. I really like the light colors with the one dark fabric. Are you going to have a pattern for this? From the first picture, I thought you had done a great job with the blue stripe fabric which after reading your blog I can see it is green and the stripes are the quilting. Thank you
