Flower Moon is a personal project that I just completed. I only learned about the flower moon recently and just fell in love with the idea of representing it somehow. I think it’s something I might like to work in in a little series and so I am considering this as the first though I don’t have more planned quite yet.

Flower moon is the traditional name for the full moon in May, a time where lots of spring flowers are blooming. In addition to the image that is conjured in my mind when I combine flowers and a full moon, I love the symbolism that it holds. It represents a time of change, of heightened emotions that lead to mental turbulence. Ultimately, leading to the confidence to be seen like the blooming flowers.
Well, I feel like this is such a time of turbulence both in the world, within the US, and then even on a personal level as a middle aged woman with kids spreading their wings. It’s an appropriate time to work on flower moon imagery. I wanted to represent the flower moon in a big way, to suggest the confidence of the blooming flowers. My quilt is 48″ square and designed and constructed with foundation paper piecing and large curved piecing. When I think of moons, I think of cream, yellow, maybe grey and the colors of the night sky. But I used deep red and a pinky peach color because I wanted to sew with them! Perhaps a later addition to this series will reflect the night sky. I do have the perfect deep purple in my stash that I have been wanting to use.

I quilted in a 40 weight Aurifil thread, in a 1/2″ grid. I thought that the squares created by the quilting reflected the square shape of the quilt itself.
