This combination of wonky log cabins, cats, and yarn balls appeals to me so much even though I am so very allergic to cats! It makes me laugh that I am making a cat quilt pattern but I am so taken by it! I honestly had a ton of fun designing it and making it and I love how it turned out, right down to the neon pink quilting. I hope you love it too.

As you can see, I chose to use chambray for my background and then selected scraps in a palette that appeals to me: pink, peach, yellow, mustard, and a touch of red. I used mostly solids with a few prints thrown in. But I was thinking of all the different approaches that you might take, while I was sewing. You could choose scraps in more realistic cat colors. You could opt to piece the body and head as one piece without the log cabin look. Many of you sort your scraps by color family. You could make a cat of each color! There are lots of possibilities and I look forward to seeing all of them.

As I mentioned, I quilted my version with Aurifil neon pink thread from Tula Pink’s collection. I love the chambray with the neon pink and it makes me wish that all my jeans had neon pink top stitching too.

We attempted a photo session with our cat, Jupiter, but she wasn’t super cooperative! We were trying to get her to sit like the cats on the quilt. But I do think she was fascinated by them, or at least by her humans staging a photo…

The quilt pattern does not include “how to” directions for foundation paper piecing. If you are a confident beginner through intermediate, this is a great pattern for you.
